Colon Cancer Challenge 2010: Team WOCN

Team Rump Runners poses in Central Park at the 2009 Colon Cancer Challenge

TEAM SPOTLIGHT: Rump Runners Team

The courage to smile in the face of an uncertain future. An ongoing desire to support others even during her most painful moments. Unconditional love. These are some of the qualities of Linda Puglisi, wife and mother of two, which motivated her daughter, Christina Puglisi to form the Rump Runners for the annual Colon Cancer Challenge in 2009. Linda was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in June 2006. In March 2010 Christina and the Rump Runners will gather to walk and run in memory of Linda Puglisi, who succumbed to the disease in December 2009 after a difficult three and a half year battle. Detected after her first colonoscopy at the age of 55, Linda’s fear had stopped her from seeking medical attention at the recommended age of 50. The team was started in the hopes of getting people to overcome their fear and raise awareness for early screenings. Only 1 out of 3 Americans, age 50 and older, have ever had any type of colon screening. Colon cancer is the #2 cause of cancer-related deaths, but, if detected early, colon cancer is also one of the most treatable cancers. Linda learned this too late. Her family is on a mission to ensure that no other family has to suffer this kind of pain again.

Last year, the Rump Runners raised over $4,000 and had 40 people come out to support the cause. One of their team members even finished within the first 100 runners for the 4-mile run. This year their goal is to raise $10,000 and have 60 supporters running and walking in Central Park on Sunday, March 28, 2010. In addition, the Rump Runners will be hosting a fundraising event to support the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation and make sure their message is received: Colorectal cancer screening saves lives! Join the Rump Runners effort in the fight against colon cancer and make sure the people you love get screened!
