TEAM SPOTLIGHT: Team Val

This is the fourth year for Team Val who participates in the Colon Cancer Challenge in honor of Valerie Ann Iovine, an amazing woman, mother and friend, who died in August 2007 after a year and a half battle with colon cancer. Valerie is survived by her husband, Thomas Iovine, and two sets of twins (Tanya and Thomas, 30 and Chris and Joe, 21).

Tanya Iovine, Valerie’s daughter, has been the team leader since Team Val was started in 2007 when her mother was still alive. Each year, Team Val has had a great turnout of family and friends. The day is always a pretty emotional one for everyone involved, especially Valerie’s children, as they miss their mom terribly. Everyone who comes out feels good knowing that they are raising money for the cause in hopes that someday there will be a cure.

Tanya’s friend, Darci Thompson, always enters the 4-mile run and also raises a great deal of money. Tanya ran the first year but likes doing the Remembrance and Prevention Walk as well to celebrate her mom. Tanya says she is hoping that someday the Challenge becomes even bigger than all of the breast cancer walks. She feels that too many people are not aware of colon cancer and the importance of colonoscopies. She hopes that teams like hers can help make a difference and bridge that gap.

Valerie’s family misses her every day and plans to participate in the Colon Cancer Challenge each year in her honor. This year Team Val made T-shirts, so look out for them in Central Park on March 28th!
