Dr. Thomas K. Weber, Professor of Surgery at the State University of New York at Downstate and Chief of Surgery at the Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System, Brooklyn Campus, founded the Colon Cancer Challenge, the first public colon cancer awareness event, in 2004. As a surgical oncologist working with colorectal cancer patients daily, he saw the importance of conducting research into the causes and cures for colorectal cancer and promoting public awareness and education.
In 2008, he started the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation with its mission to reduce colorectal cancer incidence and death through supporting research, increasing public awareness, educating the public and partnering with strategic partners in the fight against colorectal cancer.
The 2010 Challenge, the largest to date attracted over 10,000 participants and supporters in Central Park and raised funds in support of the CCCF mission.
The Foundation continues to grow in its public outreach efforts with its participation in this year’s ING Marathon Charity Runner program.
